The Golden City of Prague and the Spas
There are only a few cities that can lay claim to be described with so many complimentary names- Prague tops the list. Regarded as one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, it is known as the “Golden City”, “City of 100 Spires”, “The heart of Europe” to name only but a few. As Prague did not sustain as much damage as other major cities during the second world war, one can stroll through the heart of the city and be fascinated by its historic architecture with styles ranging from Art Nouveau to Baroque, Renaissance, Cubist, Gothic, Neo-Classical and ultra-modern. Once capital of the Holy Roman Empire it is a city steeped in history and tradition and today pulsates with life as the capital and largest city of the Czech Republic.
Take a stroll with us over the famous Charles Bridge, built in the 14th century, and lined with 30 mostly baroque-style statues which are replicas of the original. It is a main pedestrian route connecting the Old Town with the Lesser Town and Prague Castle. During the day the historic bridge bustles with tourists, street buskers, and painters armed with brushes and easel capturing the panoramic views of the Prague skyline. Witness the procession of the 12 apostles on the medieval Astronomical Clock- installed in 1410, 3rd oldest in the world and the only one still working. Visit the Strahov Monastery Library with it's collection of valuable books, illuminated manuscripts and theological texts hundreds of years old. Explore the Jewish quarter, with its historical synagogues and Europe's oldest surviving Jewish cemetery where, story has it, that Rabbi Judah Loew ben Bezalel, the Maharal of Prague (1513-1609), is said to have created a golem out of clay to protect the Jewish community.
Take time out to visit one of the numerous galleries, bohemian crystal glass shops and try out traditional Czech cuisine with rich meat dishes and fine cakes and pastries. In the tradition of kings, emperors and poets, culminate your tour with a visit to the famous spas of Carlsbad and Marienbad. Relax in the hands of experienced Czech masseurs, expert physicians and specialists in natural and spa medicine and rejuvenate yourself with the therapeutic effect of drinking water from the mineral springs, rich in free carbon dioxide and mineral salt. Saunter through the colonnades and linger in a little café offering coffee and traditional spa waffles or savour a bier in one of the famous Czech breweries.
